Background of the study:
Heavy metal contamination in farmlands adjacent to industrial areas in Epe has raised serious concerns about food safety and environmental health. Industrial discharges, improper waste management, and atmospheric deposition are significant sources of heavy metals, such as lead, cadmium, and arsenic, that accumulate in agricultural soils (Ibrahim, 2023). These contaminants can be absorbed by crops, posing risks to human health when ingested (Tunde, 2024). Local farmers are increasingly challenged by reduced soil fertility and crop quality due to toxic accumulation. The study explores the extent of heavy metal contamination, its sources, and its impact on agricultural productivity and human health. It aims to assess the risks involved and recommend effective remediation strategies to ensure sustainable farming practices (Ibrahim, 2023).
Statement of the problem:
Farmlands near industrial areas in Epe are suffering from heavy metal contamination, which threatens food safety, soil fertility, and public health. The inadequate regulation of industrial emissions and waste disposal practices has exacerbated the problem. This study seeks to quantify contamination levels and evaluate remediation options (Tunde, 2024).
Objectives of the study:
To measure heavy metal concentrations in farmlands near industrial zones.
To assess the impact of heavy metal contamination on crop quality and soil health.
To propose remediation strategies to mitigate contamination risks.
Research questions:
What are the levels of heavy metal contamination in farmlands near industrial areas in Epe?
How does heavy metal contamination affect crop quality and soil health?
What remediation strategies can effectively reduce contamination?
Research Hypotheses:
H₀: Heavy metal contamination does not significantly affect crop quality in Epe.
H₀: There is no significant relationship between industrial activity and soil heavy metal levels.
H₀: Remediation strategies will not significantly reduce heavy metal contamination.
Significance of the study:
The study is significant as it highlights the environmental and health risks posed by heavy metal contamination in agricultural areas. Its findings will inform remediation efforts and policy decisions aimed at protecting soil and crop quality in Epe (Tunde, 2024).
Scope and limitations of the study:
This research is limited to assessing heavy metal contamination in farmlands near industrial areas in Epe Local Government Area, without addressing contamination in other regions.
Definitions of terms:
Heavy Metal Contamination: The presence of toxic metals in the environment at harmful concentrations.
Industrial Areas: Regions dominated by industrial activities that may emit pollutants.
Remediation Strategies: Methods used to remove or neutralize contaminants in the environment.
